Why KIMOO
The Road to Black Belt in Santa Clara — and Why It Cannot Be Bought

You can buy a black belt online for about fifteen dollars. You can find schools that will guarantee you one in eighteen months on a payment plan.
At KIMOO Martial Arts in Santa Clara, you cannot. That is not a limitation of our program — it is the whole value of it.
Why a guaranteed black belt is worthless
The moment a rank is guaranteed by time or by payment, it stops measuring anything. A belt is a statement about what you can do. If it can be bought, it says nothing.
Our Grand Master holds 8th Dan, certified in 1992 by the Korea Traditional Hapkido Association, after beginning his training in 1971 at the Korea Hapkido Headquarters Dojang. That is decades, not a subscription.
What the journey actually looks like
- The white belt. You learn that you know nothing, and that this is fine. Your uniform and white belt are free when you join.
- The coloured belts. Technique accumulates. So does the discovery that you can do things you could not do before.
- The plateau. Every student hits it. Pushing through it is the single most valuable thing martial arts teaches.
- The black belt. Not the end. In the Korean tradition it is the point at which you are considered ready to begin learning properly.
Why parents in Santa Clara care about this
Children work out very quickly whether a reward is real. A belt that arrives on schedule regardless of effort teaches exactly the wrong lesson.
A belt that is earned teaches that persistence works. That is the lesson parents are actually paying for, and it only exists if the standard is real.
Train where the standard is held by a world champion
Grand Master Hwang won gold at the 2005 Wushu World Cup in Milan, was honoured at the White House in 2023, and was named District 2 Business of the Year by the City of Santa Clara in 2019. He holds the standard personally.
Start at the beginning. It is free.
Every black belt in our dojang started with a free trial class. Yours costs nothing, requires no equipment and carries no obligation — and when you join, your uniform and white belt are free.

Train where the standard is real
Great training is not about a flashy facility. It is about who corrects you, how closely they watch, and whether the standard they hold is a real one. At KIMOO you are corrected personally by an 8th Dan Grand Master who trained at the source of the art in 1971 — not by a rotating roster of part-time instructors.
Classes run throughout the week so students can train around school and work schedules. Call (408) 243-1001 and we will find the times that suit you and confirm your free class within one day.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to earn a black belt?
It depends entirely on the student, their consistency and their standard of technique. Any school that promises a fixed timeline is selling a date, not a rank.
Can I get a black belt quickly at KIMOO Martial Arts?
No. Rank here is earned against a standard held personally by an 8th Dan Grand Master. That is precisely what makes it worth having.
Do I get a free belt when I start?
Yes. New students receive a free uniform and white belt on enrolment. Every rank after that is earned.
Do adults earn black belts too?
Yes. Adults progress through the same ranking standards as younger students.
